Week in Photos ~ Week 13

Week 13 Overview

Week 13 flew by this past week! Here are some highlights of our learning:

  • Octavian, Julius Caesar's nephew, wins over the people, becomes Consul, then transitions to a "princely" role. He was called Rome's "First Citizen" instead of king. His name was also changed to Augustus Caesar.

  • The beginning of Christianity, the birth of Jesus, His crucifixion, His resurrection, the end of the Ancient Jewish Nation, and the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem.

  • 2 Samuel and 1 Kings- David was a great king, David sinned, David confessed and was forgiven, why Uzzah died, those who liked David and those who didn't, David's son is killed, God's promise to David, David's son (Solomon) becomes king, Solomon builds God's temple in Jerusalem, Solomon was wise in many things, but not in some things.

  • This week, our 3rd graders worked on fractions with some fun games: paper pumpkin pies, fraction pie cards, and using the math fact app.

  • Simplifying fractions, equivalent fractions, and comparing fractions

  • More than animals in the sea: hurricanes, tsunamis, boats and ships, "crittercams" in the deep sea, tide, currents, tide pools, shipwrecks, sunken treasure, and fishermen.

  • We finished Flame Over Tara and we love how it ended! This book was about the spread of Christianity into Erin (Ireland) by Saint Patrick and new Christians discovering what it means to pledge their lives to God in comparison to the beliefs of the Druids and their superstitious beliefs.

  • Our 6th grader is learning about the amazing human body in science

  • We took a break this week from grammar, spelling, and most of our writing, but we will get back to those in week 14 with some fun Thanksgiving themed activities. Our 3rd graders did write a poem. This was just a rough draft and was done independently. They really did a great job! Reading poetry everyday has helped them understand different kinds of poems, themes, and the importance of word choice.'

  • We had a little fun this week playing games on our Thanksgiving write-on activity table cloth, watching Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and Charlie Brown Mayflower, going to co-op and the park, and we had Snoopy's Thanksgiving meal (popcorn, pretzels, toast, and jelly beans).

Week In Photos ~ Week 12

This is a teacher's dream!
When they have all finished their reading time long ago,
but you find it so quiet in the car...because they are all reading.

Open House
Why did we not get a photo of our families? Whoops!

Recess sidewalk chalk

Snap chatting before pick-up

They all love this new multiplication card game.
This 3rd grader and the teacher tied FIVE times in a row!
We're so glad to be able to use the church library when we are in need.

Paper pumpkin pies to learn fractions

SOME students (all) are afraid of strange insects.
Surprisingly, the teacher was the one to rescue them.
(Note: the teacher has irrational fears of certain bugs, but not this one)

Friday's lunch and the rest of the day were a real treat for our 3rd graders!
We have the best parents at the Coleman Academy!
Stepping in while the teacher is camping with the church youth group.

Week 12 Overview

I am so excited that we were able to have our very first Coleman Academy for Girls Open House! Our amazing girls recited Scripture from memory, read papers they wrote about their moms and dads, showed off their notebooks, and played some wonderful piano pieces. Mrs. Dix played some duets with the girls and had positive comments about their growth in reading music and playing. We discovered that pretty much everyone loves brownies!

We had a substitute on Friday (who spoiled the 3rd graders for sure- haha) while our 6th grader and teacher went on a church youth camping trip.

Here are some highlights from week 12 in regard to our studies:
  • Ocean animals: whales, sharks, dolphins, rays, deep sea creatures, sea creature migration, Arctic and Antarctic animals, and waves
  • Ancient China: Great Wall, Silk Road, terracotta army of Qin Shi Huangdi, Confucius
  • Rome: The rise of Julius Caesar, consuls of Rome, Senate of Rome, Caesar fights the Celts, "You're about to cross the Rubicon", Caesar and Cleopatra, "Et tu, Brute?"
  • 1 Samuel: Israel's last judge, Saul's struggles as king, David appointed as king, trusting and obeying in God's Word
  • Fractions: identifying equivalent fractions
  • Multiplication fact memorization x0, x1, x2
  • We started practicing our multiplication memorization on an app that can track our progress and adjust practice problems to the quizzes each student takes. We are starting off slow with the easier facts and will work through all the facts. Each student will go at their own pace.
  • Our 3rd graders took time to read a variety of genres in their independent reading time this week
  • Vocabulary- we are on to lesson 6 with some great words, such as: loathe, meddle, grim, escalate, monstrous, steadfast, agony, inflict, abolish, etc...
A short list this week, but the learning was not short.
We hope you enjoy the photos of the week, coming soon!
