Week 27 Overview

Bible- Completing the Gospels, we looked at Jesus's last week on earth. From Jesus entering Jerusalem to the Passover Meal (which was also the Last Supper) to Jesus's prayer, to his illegal trial, to his crucifixion, to his burial and resurrection. Jesus is alive! Perfect timing as Easter approaches.

We also watched a National Geographic documentary titled Jerusalem. This tied together Bible facts and what we have read in Story of the World. It's a great view of Jerusalem through the eyes of three young ladies: a Jew, a Muslim, and a Christian. We highly recommend viewing it. We rented it from Amazon.

History- In Story of the World, we covered the Hundred Years War between France and England. This included the following: Henry V (became king of England in 1413) and the Battle of Agincourt, Joan of Arc, the Burgundians, and French King Charles VII. We briefly discussed Shakespeare's play titled Henry V. We also had a lot of review from the last couple of weeks by using our Kingfisher Encyclopedia.

Independent Reading- Our students read more chapter books this week and that brings our donation to Kyiv Christian Academy to $16! We've read 16 chapter books in March.

Read Aloud- We are getting to some suspenseful parts in Shakespeare Stealer! Widge was so enthralled with Hamlet that he forgot to write down all the lines. Will he be able to fix this?

Writing- Writing Haiku poetry ourselves

Math in 3rd grade- telling time to the minute and elapsed time. We are practicing using a timeline to solve these problems (students are told not to use a traditional addition or subtraction problem at this time because conversions are often involved and students are not able to solve the problems accurately using that method. This is common at this grade level. Studies show that the best way for most 3rd graders to accurately solve elapsed time problems is to use a timeline). We will add an example in our Week in Photos.

Math in 6th grade- Geometry ~ Angles in triangles, quadrilaterals, & congruent and similar figures. Also, Chapter 13 quiz.

Science in 3rd Grade- Biology ~ Protists and the differences between the three types: amoeba (with pseudopod), paramecia (with cilia), and euglena (with a flagellum). We learned how they move and how they get food. (Watch a short video on Protists- link located in our Usborne Quicklinks post week 27).

Science 6th grade- Chemistry ~ activation energy, reactivity, catalysts and inhibitors, balancing equations, and six types of reactions.

Happy learning!

Usborne Quicklinks ~ Week 27

In addition to our Usborne Links, check out this introduction video about Protists (Protozoa) that our 3rd graders watched! It is made like a movie trailer, so it was highly interesting to our students.
