Week 3 Overview



This week was packed with learning and some other fun things. We loved our second piano lesson with Mrs. Dix and our VERY FIRST Friday at co-op was fantastic, as we knew it would be. See our Saturday post about that (coming soon)! Co-op was so great that it deserves its own post.

Here's some of our studies from this week:

Language Arts:
  • reading aloud The Golden Goblet (chapter book)
  • reading some of Brod Bagert's poetry (always a hit with kids)
  • reading poems about family
  • using Psalm 100 for fluency and memorization
  • diagramming interrogative sentences (aka questions)
  • reviewing helping verbs
  • sustained silent reading for 20-30 minutes
  • 15-20 minutes independent piano practice
  • spelling: "changing y to i to add es" ex. penny >> pennies
  • our new vocabulary words: beverage, crave, cultivate, export, tropical, aroma, brittle, cluster, equivalent, extract, bland, combine, consume, introduce, and purchase
  • writing: finished our rough drafts about our dads
Bible & Other History:
  • Genesis and God's design in creation, the first man and woman, sin, and Noah
  • Mesopotamia, Babylon, Joseph (Bible), Hammurabi & the Babylonians, the Assyrians, & the first cities in India (Indus Vally)
  • finding places on the map: Canaan, Babylon, Assur, Crete, Arabian Sea, India, Assyria and more
Math:
  • memorizing doubles (1-10)
  • fact fluency review (+0, - 0, +1, -1, +2, -2)
  • Adding numbers into the thousands with and without regrouping
  • word problems: deciding the operation (add or subtract)
Science:
  • cells: the building blocks of life
  • mammals' meals, how some animals move, how some animals protect themselves
  • unique characteristics that God gave the giraffe and the platypus
