We started out week 15 (December 1st and December 4th-7th) without two of our students. Two students went on a cruise to the Bahamas for Christmas. But, they still competed their work for both days they missed (This teacher doesn't let anyone out of work...haha). The teacher and one third grader enjoyed co-op on Friday and a trip to Barnes and Noble for a special lunch, a sweet drink, and a holiday book!
We were busy with dentist appointments, orthodontist appointments, dance, and piano, but that didn't stop us from our studies. Here are some things we learned in week 15:
- We FINISHED reading the Story of the World: Ancient Times (300 page chapter book) which took us right up to the fall of the Roman Empire around AD 500. We began the next Story of the World: Middle Ages (also known as Medieval Times). This week was just a transition between the two through our Kingfisher Encyclopedia, Story of the World, and 12,000 Years of World History books.
- Bible Field Guide- Kings and prophets of Israel. We are learning about the kings of Israel and how they did not listen to the prophets that God sent to deliver his warnings. Israel was a nation for just over 200 years. During those years, time after time, kings were warned and they did not listen. This was devastating for Israel. (This week covered 1 Kings 12- 2 Kings 18, Obadiah, Jonah, Amos, and Hosea).
- Our 6th grader finished reading The Ides of April, a murder-mystery set in Roman times.
- Our 3rd graders began reading individual books that they each chose from the local library. Both are longer chapter books than they usually read, so this is a great chance to push them into more mature readers.
- In math, 3rd grade continued working on the standard algorithm for multiplying two digit by one digit numbers. They are doing fantastic with this skill!
- We continue to read poetry and Scripture each day.
- Daily math review and timed quizzes on single digit multiplication facts are given every day. Each student works at their own pace for the multiplication quizzes. They do not move ahead without mastering the currently tested skill.
- Our vocabulary from Lesson 7 is complete, though we did not find many of them in our reading during weeks 14 and 15. Colony was our word winner, which we found 12 times, thanks to our 3rd grade science lessons this week about ants and other insects.
- 3rd grade science- How insects fool their predators, how insects help plants, colonies, life-cycle of the butterfly, and silkworms
- 6th grade science- origin of Earth, how fossils are formed, Genesis account of creation vs evolutionist theories, and how the following works: aerobatic airplane, helicopter, elevators, and escalator.
Not a lot of photos in our weekly photo post for week 15, but be sure to look out for week 16 photos!
