Week 29 Overview

Bible

Acts chapter 3-12
We learned about the apostles persecution & the miracles Peter performed. One of the favorite things we learned was the believers' prayer in Acts 4:23-31. They remembered that God is all powerful creator and praised Him! They asked God to help them speak His Word without fear and to be brave by showing the power of Jesus. We also learned about the first deacons, what a martyr is (and Stephen's ministry and death) and personal evangelism. Peter shares God's Word with us in the book of 1 & 2 Peter, as well.

History

Although we have come to the end of the Middle Ages in the history of some countries or people groups, we are taking time to go back a few hundred to a thousand years to tell the stories from other countries and people groups. This week, we looked at Ghana Empire and the Mali Empire. Europeans called Ghana the Land of Gold, but in fact, Ghana didn't have much gold. Instead, it became wealthy by taxing those south of Ghana for the gold they wished to bring through Ghana on their way north and Ghana taxed those in the north wishing to come through with their salt. While the kingdom of Ghana flourished for a long time, when its king would not convert to Islam, African Muslims attacked its cities repeatedly.

Meanwhile, Mali grew stronger. Mali took over the gold and salt trade as Ghana fell apart. Mali was an Islamic kingdom. Mansa Musa was the most famous Mali king. He became famous when he made a pilgrimage (or hajj) to Mecca, the holy city of the Muslim religion. It is because of this journey that Europeans learned about the country of Mali through maps that were created.
