Week In Photos ~ Week 16

Posting in reverse order from the week because we are the MOST excited about our first field trip of the school year! Sweet Pete's Candy Shop. Read all about it in a separate special Sweet Pete's post.

Below- Sea Salt Caramels- Sweet Pete's most popular candy.
They really are the best caramels!
I've tried caramels from a lot of places and none compare to these.

200 pounds of dark chocolate. This vat can hold about 450 pounds.

 Making our specialized chocolate bars.
Apparently, third graders like pop rocks on their chocolate bars.

 Hemming Plaza

 They designed a "fountain".
Everyone enjoyed traveling on the Skyway across the river to Hemming Plaza.

We got to see our two ballerinas show off their skills in a few classes this week.

During recess, they came up with their own version of Little Red Riding Hood.
They performed it for me in costumes they created. It was great!
Not so bad, but maybe our least favorite was the trip to the orthodontist.
It's hard to compete with Sweet Pete's, Charlie Brown Christmas, and dance parties. This little cookie is preparing for an expander and partial braces. Stay tuned for week 17 excitement!

Week 16 Overview

Week 16 (Friday, December 8th to Thursday, December 14th) was full of fun! First, our students performed in front of our entire co-op. Our 6th grader played two songs on the piano and our 3rd graders each recited Scripture (yes, from memory), then played a song on the piano, as well. We just need to work on slowing down a bit. That happens to us all when we get nervous. But, they were brave and did a great job!

We had our first field trip to Sweet Pete's Candy shop. This was fun and we enjoyed riding the Skyway, too.

We enjoyed some treats when our dancers had a party between dance classes.

Of course, Charlie Brown Christmas was a must to watch this week! And we had fun with some crafty items from our favorite parent and from the teacher.

Here's our learning:

We are slowly working on memorizing Philippians 4:4-9

Bible Field Guide- 1 Kings 17- 2 Kings 13, the prophets Elijah and Elisha, Israel's most evil king (Ahab, who was married to Jezebel), and Baal worship in Israel.

History (Middle Ages)- The early days of Britain, Celts of Britain, Barbarians come to Britain, Beowulf, Christianity comes to Britain, and Augustine comes to England.

Read Aloud- Christmas Cookies, This is a sweet story about how baking Christmas cookies to share the love and story of Christ. As an angel shaped cookie is shared with a stranger, so is the story of the Angel that appeared to Mary.

3rd grade math- LONG DIVISION! Well, our 3rd graders didn't take to this as fast as they did the standard algorithm for multiplication, but we will get it. We aren't going to let it beat us. We continue to work on multiplication, as well. We have next week and a couple more weeks in January before we move on to another topic, so we have plenty more division problems to complete. (The students are thrilled, I tell you.)

6th grade math- add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and decimals

3rd grade writing- progress check in journal (I can't wait for Christmas because... and field trip response form)

3rd grade science- Book: Real Science 4 Kids/ Biology Level I

Week In Photos ~ Week 15

Well, it appears that some of our week 15 photos were posted in the week 14 post. Am I the only one that doesn't know what week we're in? Ah, the busy holiday season is upon us!
Well, in addition to one of our 3rd graders having fun at the bookstore with the teacher, we made a trip to the dentist. It was a LITTLE distracting in the waiting area. While trying to complete schoolwork, we saw a show about a chimpanzee in clothes, brushing his teeth, waiting for the tooth fairy, and a seal getting his teeth brushed. Who can concentrate on schoolwork? Not even me.

So much learning going on...how to play video games at the dentist.
Our elf made his appearance and all the students like to "find" him each day.
What? You want to know what we learned in week 15? Check out our week 15 Weekly Update! We really did work hard in week 15. :)

Week 15 Overview

We started out week 15 (December 1st and December 4th-7th) without two of our students. Two students went on a cruise to the Bahamas for Christmas. But, they still competed their work for both days they missed (This teacher doesn't let anyone out of work...haha). The teacher and one third grader enjoyed co-op on Friday and a trip to Barnes and Noble for a special lunch, a sweet drink, and a holiday book!

We were busy with dentist appointments, orthodontist appointments, dance, and piano, but that didn't stop us from our studies. Here are some things we learned in week 15:

  • We FINISHED reading the Story of the World: Ancient Times (300 page chapter book) which took us right up to the fall of the Roman Empire around AD 500. We began the next Story of the World: Middle Ages (also known as Medieval Times). This week was just a transition between the two through our Kingfisher Encyclopedia, Story of the World, and 12,000 Years of World History books.
  • Bible Field Guide- Kings and prophets of Israel. We are learning about the kings of Israel and how they did not listen to the prophets that God sent to deliver his warnings. Israel was a nation for just over 200 years. During those years, time after time, kings were warned and they did not listen. This was devastating for Israel. (This week covered 1 Kings 12- 2 Kings 18, Obadiah, Jonah, Amos, and Hosea).
  • Our 6th grader finished reading The Ides of April, a murder-mystery set in Roman times.
  • Our 3rd graders began reading individual books that they each chose from the local library. Both are longer chapter books than they usually read, so this is a great chance to push them into more mature readers.
  • In math, 3rd grade continued working on the standard algorithm for multiplying two digit by one digit numbers. They are doing fantastic with this skill!
  • We continue to read poetry and Scripture each day.
  • Daily math review and timed quizzes on single digit multiplication facts are given every day. Each student works at their own pace for the multiplication quizzes. They do not move ahead without mastering the currently tested skill.
  • Our vocabulary from Lesson 7 is complete, though we did not find many of them in our reading during weeks 14 and 15. Colony was our word winner, which we found 12 times, thanks to our 3rd grade science lessons this week about ants and other insects.
  • 3rd grade science- How insects fool their predators, how insects help plants, colonies, life-cycle of the butterfly, and silkworms
  • 6th grade science- origin of Earth, how fossils are formed, Genesis account of creation vs evolutionist theories, and how the following works: aerobatic airplane, helicopter, elevators, and escalator.
Not a lot of photos in our weekly photo post for week 15, but be sure to look out for week 16 photos!
